V+(으)ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다 ~ to know how to/not know how to
We can use V+(으)ㄹ 줄 알다 to express that one knows how to do V, or use V+(으)ㄹ 줄 모르다 to express that you don’t know how to do V.
Examples
스키를 탈 줄 몰라요.
I don’t know how to ski.
가) 무슨 한국음식을 만들 줄 알아요?
나) 떡볶이만 만들 줄 알아요.
가) What Korean foods do you know how to cook?

This expresses the time starting when a certain action begins and lasts until it ends.
Examples
아이들이 자는 동안 산타가 선물을 주고 가요.

V+(으)면 안 되다 ~ You shouldn’t V, you’re not supposed to V
To say “you’re not supposed to V” or “you shouldn’t V”, we can add (으)면 안 되다 to the verb stem.
Examples
고양이 만지면 안 돼요.
You’re not supposed to touch the cat.
지금 가면 안 돼요.
You shouldn’t go now.
아직 먹으면 안 돼요. 아직 뜨거워요.
You should eat yet. It’s still hot.
TOPIK Writing Challenge #1
Why not practise your Korean writing skills?
In this series I’ll post past essay questions from past TOPIK beginner papers. I encourage you to have a go at answering the questions, either in a testing situation or with a dictionary and your study notes. After you’ve completed your answer maybe get some corrections from a friend or a website such as lang-8.
Here’s the 1st question from the 10th TOPIK: 여러분은 여행을 좋아합니까? 특별히 좋아하는 장소가 있습니까? 왜 그 장소를 좋아합니까? 쓰십시오.
Perhaps before attempting the question check out my suggested strategies for writing.
Here’s my response to the question which I had corrected on lang-8:
저는 여행을 아주 좋아합니다. 여행을 남자친구랑 제일 좋아합니다. 남자친구랑 여행가는 것을 제일 좋아합니다. 대한민국과 싱가포르에 같이 갔슴니다. 저는 대한민국과 싱가포르에 같이 갔습니다. 특별히 좋아하는 장소가 한국이예요. 한국에는 맛 좋은 음식, 아름다운 장소 그리고 착한 사람들 있습니다.
한국에는 한 번 갔고, 다음 달에 또 다시 갈 겁니다. 지난번 갔을 때는 남자친구 와 남차친구의 어머님이 같이 갔습니다. 다음 달에는 어머님은 가지 않지만, 어머님도 같이 가고 싶습니다.
지금은 호주에서 살지만 언젠가 한국에서 살고, 일하고 싶습니다.
